The whole family got our shirts and water bottels and we hit the road.We saw a documentary about elephant abuse. When we got to the park we wre introduced to Hin,Eak,Nat and Chet our co ordinaters.Nat brought us to our room (the nursry hut) and we settled in.Before that we had fed the elephants and bathed them.We had lunch before that to.
The tipical day at the Elephant Nature Park started with a morning chore.Elephant food was when you took about one billion melons off the shelves and washed them.Housekeeping was where we swept and took out recycling. Elephant poo was where you shoveled poo.Cutting corn was where you nap down a whole feild of corn at the stem.If you were cutting corn you got the whole day off after. your next job was any job that needed to be done. This was called morning project. Elephant feeding time was next and after that, lunch. You washed elephants after that and then another odd job wich they called after noon project. You had free time until dinner. After dinner there was a evening event.Every day was like this with the exeption of  friday and sunday (when we left). On friday we went to a hill tribe because the park voluteers had helped build there temple so they had a festival to thank the park.

We got on the line four of the Beijing (I love spelling that word)subway to Xidan station. We were going to go to tian amen square first but we decided to go get warm clothes at the silk market.Boy,its crazy,Every body is pulling you into their shops and saying"I give you special price look".You get the Idea.We never made it to the Tian Amen square that day. Next day,we took the subway to the Forbiden City.In old china it was a city that only royalties or soldiers were welcome. Now ofcourse,it is totaly open to the public. It is a interesting place full of chinese buildings. The chinese believed that their sloping rofes wich make their buildings so unique, kept off evil spirts. We did make it to Tian Amen square that day.The next day we stayed at the hotel and had a home school work day. That night we went to the acrobatic show.It is so amazing. All the acrobats started as humans but soon were a series of shapeless thing that were contantly moving. They turned themselves bake to humans at the snap of a finger.Friday we got u early and got on a bus where they served foul MC.Donalds egg sandwiches. It was a tour to Jinsaling great wall and we got on the wall and began to hike.We hiked six miles of the wall and it took us 4 1/2 hours to do it then we got to Simatai.Me,Charlie,Mae,Mom and dad took a zipline,a boat and a mini bus to lunch.Aidan, just a mini bus. The next day we went to a place called the dirt market and got Me a stamp with my name in Chinese and charlie a dagger.Next day we got up early again and went to the airport on the subway. Sam,
I've been wondering for days what living and working at an Elephant Park might be like. Now I know a little bit more. Sounds like you worked hard. Elephants are a lot of work. How was your housing and food?
You said you had stitches; how did you get them?
I'm off to Charlottesville this weekend to perform a wedding. Should be great fun. A Christian woman and a Jewish man are getting married and I am including elements from both faith traditions in the wedding.
I love you. Give my best to the family.

  2. Hi Sam,

It sounds like you got to do quite a variety of tasks at the elephant park. Did you have a favorite? I think it might be fun to scrub the elephants, but a little scary too...they're big! I'm going to share this post with Carly and Ethan tomorrow. They like to hear what you're doing.

    Take care,
    Heather

  3. Sam,
I just got home from Asheville after having my car break down. I had to have a new water pump. Very expensive! Earlier in the week I joined two friends from my college days in Cleveland, Tn where we had founded a fraternity in 1962. That evening, Tuesday, we went to a fraternity meeting and met the men who currently belong to the fraternity and were they ever impressed to meet the founders of their fraternity. Before the night was over they were taking off their shirts and having us sign them! Even being a minor celebrity has its fun moments.
Keep writing. I love to hear what's happening.
Give Mae and the twins my greetings. You also have my permission to say 'Hello' to your Mom and Dad.

    Love,
    Grandpa James
